Princeton ISD health safety update 03.17.20

As situations centered around our response to the COVID-19 crisis continue to evolve and questions arise, Princeton ISD is committed to keeping our parents and students informed. We will routinely distribute emails, and this information will be sent through social media, as well as posted on the district website under Latest Headlines on the main page or under the COVID-19 information tab at www.princetonisd.net.
At the regular monthly meeting of the school board Monday night, trustees approved several items related to the COVID-19 health safety shutdown currently in place for Princeton ISD until May 4.
 
Most importantly, food distribution will begin next week. The details of this process will be forthcoming as teachers spend today contacting parents and students to identify needs.
 
"Once these surveys are complete, we will work together to devise the best plan for not only distributing food, but getting school work to our students," Superintendent Philip Anthony said. "We anticipate having the information sent out for how this will look by at least Thursday."
 
However, some things are known.
 
Food distribution
Food will be available for pickup daily beginning Monday, March 23, at every campus except the high school (whose students will be serviced through distribution at Clark), with hours to be determined. Breakfast and lunch will be provided in individual bags for each student 18 and younger.
 
In addition, the board approved to provide a box of meals that will serve breakfast and lunch for a 5-day week to any student who is currently offered services through the free and reduced meal program.
 
This will function much like the summer meal program, but everything will be provided in one to-go box each week.
 
"While we hope to be reimbursed for this food service, the board has committed to do this whether or not the federal government offers financial assistance," Mr. Anthony said.
 
Drive-thru system
Once daily distribution times are determined, the district anticipates providing food and class assignments utilizing a drive-thru system. Work can also be returned to the school through this method for students choosing the alternate program to the online instruction option.
 
Employee pay
In addition, the board voted to continue pay for all employees, including substitutes, which will be based on the average number of hours the substitutes have typically been working. To receive this compensative, the substitutes must continue to offer their assistance at the schools when needed.
 
"We want to thank all our employees who have already been working to help during this difficult time of uncertainty," Mr. Anthony said. "All our employees continue to work. Some are working from home, some are coming in. All our employees are pitching in and offering to help, so it's anything but a vacation for our teachers and staff."
 
Office hours
Beginning March 23, all campuses will have limited staff working in the office daily from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. to help answer any questions.
 
Facilities off-limits
In order to comply with the government's guidance to limit gatherings of 10 or more, district facilities, including the tracks, tennis courts and football fields will remain closed.
 
"We are asking people to not use the facilities," Mr. Anthony said. "When facilities are available, kids tend to gather and this does not comply with what the government has recommended. We want to assist in enforcing this request, not encourage gathering in groups at the facilities."
