Harper student attends young leaders conference

Local fifth-grade student Anika Joshvi Maria Antony has successfully completed the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC), held this summer at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Selected through a teacher nomination from Harper Elementary School, Anika joined students from across the nation for a week of leadership development, teamwork, civic engagement and hands-on learning.

Throughout the residential program, participants explored American history through visits to significant landmarks and museums while developing leadership and communication skills. Anika said she particularly enjoyed seeing the original Star-Spangled Banner, visiting George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, making new friends and learning how courageous leaders inspired others during challenging times.

Sharing her own thoughts after returning home, Anika said, "I had so much fun, made new friends, and learned new things."

In addition, she described what she learned about leadership as, "inspiring people for the right cause, standing up to tyrants, fighting for what is right, and being brave."

Her parents said the experience broadened Anika's understanding of leadership and strengthened her confidence, curiosity and desire to continue learning. They also expressed heartfelt appreciation to Harper 5th-grade teacher Kasey Carker, whose nomination made this opportunity possible.

Anika said she hopes her experience "encourages other students to embrace educational opportunities that challenge them to grow as learners, leaders and responsible citizens."
