Chris Folsom's
Academic
Training,
Teaching Experience, and Assorted Life Facts

My
Mother (Hi Mom) enjoys an irony of our family's
life tremendously. I have returned to Princeton after being born
in another one - that funny little Princeton in New Jersey - as my
father was
in graduate school. Our family of six lived in Manhattan, Kansas
through the period of the children growing up. I was always nice to my three sisters and
was an enthusiastic (if not particularly skilled) participant in
debate, cross-country and basketball.
I moved a few miles down the road to
Lawrence to
attend the University of Kansas and majored in math, economics and
history. I went to Madison, Wisconsin for graduate school and
earned teaching certification there. I taught in conventional
schools in Madison for two years and then in very unconventional
schools in Seattle for six. That time was split between the
school in the juvenile detention center, schools aimed at street youth
otherwise uninvolved in school, and various re-entry programs.
The opportunity to work with
student-athletes at the
University of North Texas brought me to Denton and into a program I
stayed with for five years. I became the director of the
basketball and football teams' academic support programs and am proud
of many of the changes we introduced. We did
not lose a single student-athlete to grades, largely because of the
tremendous support of the coaches throughout my tenure and our ability
to involve families and other resources as needed.
I have been at Princeton High School
since 2001 and
love our community's commitment to our school programs. I have
watched a wonderful new building grow around me, extra-curricular
organizations increasingly excel, and a daughter grow. And yes, Olivia likes math, is beautiful and
runs fast.
